Here at Neal Communities, while we celebrate everyday milestones and cherish our hard working team of professionals, we also continually honor our roots. We know that it’s where we have been and things we have learned along the way that make us who we are today. That rich history starts with our leader, and the legacy he and his family have formed over more than four decades of community involvement, home building experience, and devotion to perfecting his craft. A long standing Florida resident, family man and businessman, as well as a former state Legislator and Senator, Pat Neal is a recognized community and statewide leader.
Pat created Neal Communities in 1974, but his experience in construction began several years before that, taking part in the family construction business. Since then his formidable enterprise has built more than 9,000 homes, 11,000 lots and several commercial ventures in Southwest Florida. Here are some highlights of our incredible journey:
In 1970, the founders of Neal Communities launched their first Florida project at Whitney Beach, where home sales started at $23,900. Since then we have grown tremendously in size and volume and have added on several divisions to our company, creating a fully integrated home building enterprise. We’ve learned a lot over the years, about being good stewards of the land and our communities; philosophies woven through everything we do here at Neal Communities.
In 1982, we had 14 communities underway. Pat Neal earned the award for Meritorious Public Service as Most Effective in Committee, while serving in the Florida Senate, and earned the Florida Audubon Society & Sierra Club Legislative Award. Our 3,000th home was also built that year at the Perico Bay Club - and sold for $59,500. Our sales surpassed $85 million that year.
In 1990, we embarked on a new adventure at University Park, starting development on a 1,200 home master planned community that has since earned several prestigious awards, including best community design in America by the National Association of Home Builders. Golf Digest rated the golf course 4-star, and University Park was named best community in the Southeast and best development in region. That was also the year that Pat Neal was appointed to the Florida Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
In 1998, Neal Communities launched our annual “My Favorite Home” Contest, working with local elementary schools to showcase student artwork. This was the year that we also ventured into a new community called Lakewood Ranch, building homes at The Lakewood Ranch Country Club.
We celebrated our 30th anniversary in the year 2000 and two years later we opened University Place and Woodlands Park. That’s when the Neal corporate headquarters moved to Lakewood Ranch and Pat Neal was named the most influential Floridian. Neal Communities broke ground on its 6,000th home that year and Pat’s oldest son John Neal joined Neal Communities.
2005 was a big year for Neal. We opened even more neighborhoods, we unveiled our beautiful Design Gallery and we built our 7,000th home. Pat Neal was named humanitarian of the year, and we broke ground on Central Park at Lakewood Ranch. Waterscapes Pools & Spas opened with a splash, and Charlene Neal designed her 60th Model Home.
In 2010, we hit our 40th anniversary, expanding into Venice. Charlene Neal PureStyle opened, and we broke ground on our largest community to date at Grand Palm in Venice, the first project approved under the stringent requirements of Sarasota County’s 2050 plan. Neal Communities also reached its 8,000th home milestone.
In 2012 Builder Magazine named Neal Communities America’s Best Builder and we opened Grand Palm, our 1,999 home master planned community in Venice.
In 2013, we celebrated our busiest year on record, with more homes sold than ever before, and rejoiced in our 9,000th home built.
In 2014 and looking ahead to the future, we look back upon our rich history while embracing new traditions and milestones yet to come. We hope you’ll join us on this exciting journey.
